There are ways to tie bow ties, and then there are ways to tie the bow tie. Ties more often than not are pieces of accessories that can make or break a whole ensemble. Choosing the right tie, the right colour, the right material and then the right dimensions can be very tricky. Add to that the fact that there are different types of ties for different occasions. So how do you keep up with all that hard work of knowing and learning how to tie and choose different ties? If that question is running in your mind right now, you’re at the right place reading the right words; because together we will now demystify the humble tie, and at the end of it all you shall be pointed in the right direction. Let’s move on.
Regular Neckties: The word “regular” has been loosely used here for want of a better word, especially considering how very sophisticated ties can be. There is no “definite” or “absolute” when it comes to regular ties but ideally they should meet some criteria when it comes to the materials and the dimensions. Ideally, the width should either be 8.5cm or 7.5cm while the length about 144.5cm depending on your build and height. The best ties come handmade from Italy, made entirely of silk and lined with wool. Regarding knots, there are endless ways to tie a tie but the best are the Windsor knot and the four-in-hand. These two knots are timeless classics that will always remain in fashion no matter how many countless other fancy knots come and go.
Bow Ties: Although they never completely went out of fashion, bow ties have made a dashing comeback into the mainstream what with more youngsters adopting them into their casual dress codes. There is nothing that can make a man look more suave and sophisticated than a bow tie worn along with a dinner jacket. But there is a stereotypical myth that they are worn exclusively by dorks and old people, which is all wrong. First of all, there is no minimum age for sophistication. My 5 year-old son wore a bow tie on his last birthday party and he looked absolutely like a true gentleman. Second of all, there are certain materials and fabrics that shall set you apart. Pure silk or a silk and wool mix are what you are looking for. Third, and most important are two points: bow ties should never exceed the tips of your shirt collar and be wider than the broadest part of your neck. Remember them well and you will be busting stereotypes in style.
Cravat/ Ascot Tie: The Cravat or the Ascot tie was only worn formally once, but now thanks to Hollywood stars, they have become popular as casual wear too. There’s nothing much that can be said about the Cravat; nothing can do justice to them or to the quality they exude. The only things I can give you about the Ascot tie are instructions – wear a silk Cravat with lightweight shirt and a cashmere Ascot tie with a heavy suit. The Cravat/ Ascot tie should be the highlight of your outfit. That’s the only things I can tell you now, you have to wear a Cravat to actually know the rest about them! So go on and buy one now!
Instructions on how to tie and a range of different premium ties and bow ties can be found on websites of select men’s fashion labels, so it best to buy from them.
